El Galeón, Spanish Galleon Reproduction to Visit St. Augustine

El GaleonHistory is so fascinating and even beautiful, especially in the case of El Galeón, a 170-foot, 495-ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet.

The Viva Florida 500 Voyage of El Galeón will call on ports in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Cape Canaveral and St. Augustine as part of the state’s Quincentenary commemorations. The ship is sailing a historic route similar to Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León’s 500 years ago. The ship set sail from Puerto Rico on April 1 and will spend 12 days in St. Augustine May 23 – June 3.

While in port, the ship’s decks will be open to public visits. Visitors will have the chance to learn about the history that began 500 years ago while admiring the craftsmanship and grandeur of these galleons that reached Florida’s coast centuries ago.

Tickets for El Galeón are available at www.vivaflorida.org. The ship will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the St. Augustine City Marina. Tickets are $8 for children age 12 and under and $15 for adults.

What a View from the St. Augustine Lighthouse!

St. Augustine LighthouseThe spectacular view is worth the climb! The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum is a great “attraction” in the ancient city and the view from the top will be the highlight of your visit. The climb of 219 steps of the St. Augustine Lighthouse offers several landings for a welcome respite along the way if you need it; and, once the top is reached, the view is spectacular and definitely worth the effort (bring your camera)!

The self-guided tour of the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum is made more interesting by the audio recordings provided by a self-regulated hand-held electronic recorder. Visitors may pick up one as they exit the gift shop. It allows visitors to tour the grounds, lighthouse and museum at their own pace.

During inclement weather, the observation deck and /or tower may be closed for your safety. If the weather looks threatening, please call 904-829-0745 to check the tower’s status.

Be sure to shop in the museum store for quality lighthouse replicas as well as maritime gifts. Admission is not required to shop.

Tickets: $9.50
Senior 60+: $7.50
Children 12 & Under: $7.50

After your climb, return to your beautiful condo with great ocean views at Anastasia Condos. You can check out the other properties that Coastal Realty manages by clicking here.
